Basically, this is a meter that sends automatic readings to a supplier.
There are currently two types of SMART meter.
SMETS1 Smart Meter - This is a first-generation smart meter that sends meter readings automatically to an energy supplier. This type of meter only works as a smart meter when used in combination with the energy supplier who fitted it. If you choose to switch to a different supplier, your smart meter will continue to function as a meter, but readings won’t be sent automatically. You will not realise all your Social Energy Hub benefits with a SMETS1 Meter.
SMETS2 Smart Meter - This is a second-generation meter which sends automatic readings to any energy supplier that you switch to. To realise your Social Energy Hub benefits you will need a SMETS2 Meter, as this type of meter also records export consumption.
